Our phones can speak to us (just as a human would). Our home appliances
can take commands (just as a human would). Our cars will be able to
drive themselves (just as a human would). What does “human” even mean?

There is no doubt that, with increasing technological advances, the gap between man and machine is progressively shrinking. Every day, more and more developments are being made that are allowing machines to take up human like characteristics and functions. Will the gap between man and machine eventually close entirely? I don't think so. Machines are limited to that in which they are programmed; they lack empathy and compassion. A machine doesn't have a favorite drink, a machine doesn't have a favorite book and, overall, a machine can't reproduce.

In this advanced world humans have created electronic devices that mimic human actions. These devices are designed to closely resemble humans performing productive functions that are not found in any other natural part of this planet. Siri on the iPhone has the capability to interact with humans as if she were a human too. Just because these devices are performing human like functions does not make a iPhone, car, or oven a Human. Humans are living beings with souls and this is what greatly tarnishes the idea of robots being humans.

What it means to be human
Human to me is the flawed mental thinking process and physical form. True, while many items act human they act according to perfected engineered algorithms. These human like forms that take the place of humans while, accomplishing tasks twice the rate of a actual human, they, are not real and could lead to a very dangerous concept. The theory that artificial intelligence will one day take over the world is possible and not to far from true. The only flaw in the design is that while these machines may be able to take on human like personas they are programmed by imperfect humans. While technology does make life easier every time humans create a new and relative technological advancement we lose a part of ourselves that once operated as that function. As a race understanding the possibilities of technologies today and in the future we must take into consideration the possibility of complete A.I. life forms running the planet.
The amount of technology that exists in the world today is both helpful and scary. It may eliminate tedious and unwanted work, but with that it also takes away experience and the opportunity to learn on a different level. There is no such thing as a perfect human, so if technology is man-made how can it ever be expected to reach perfection? These types of technologies possess a lot of what the brain contains but lacks one of the biggest factors that determine human and non-human. The ability to feel, or emotion, is a scary thing to live without. It allows a human to understand the difference between right and wrong. With such a major factor missing, much of the technology has a high chance of danger. Technology can never replace a human's touch.
ReplyDeleteTechnology freaks me out although I am addicted to it. I think i would suffocate if I went a week without my phone. Sometimes I think of how many aspects of my life are stored in my phone and it gives me chills. I do not like the idea of any kind of robot, because they can outsmart human beings. The idea of a robot writer is not acceptable. Writing in any form is an art that requires intelligence and training. It is not the same if a non-human robot created it. Being human means that we have our own feelings, emotions, and opinions. Those three things are reflected in writing. Any kind of robot doesn't have those attributes.

The 21st century has been filled with technological advancements. We always want the newest thing. It kind of became a sickness that humans have. If we are always wanting new technology and things done for us, what are we actually learning? Schooling and life skills are not the same because the computer has many of these capabilities. For example, robots have been writing news articles and blogs. That seems completely strange considering computers do not have emotions or items they prefer. They lack compassion and real feelings. In the future, humans will not be responsible for very much since soon, we won't even be driving our own cars, robots will! It seems like a very frightening thought but that being said, I couldn't imagine going a day or two without some form of technology. I'm all for new advancements but when will it get to much is the question that I cannot figure out.

Technology is a growing thing and we cannot stop it. Technology has many benefits but also has some disadvantages to it. In the growing world today, technology can do things that no one ever thought would be possible. With the idea of robots writing blogs and articles would be beneficial for the people who write them to maybe take a load off their chest, but it would not have the same emotion or enthusiasm if humans write them. No matter what, a robot will not be able to write with the same emotion as a human would. Being human is so special and our writing is how we express our feelings. If robots do this, it would not mean the same if a human wrote it.

Growing up with rapidly advancing technology seems like it's both a blessing and a curse. Going into the medical field, I am excited to see technological advancements and how they help in my career of choice, but I'm also nervous over the fact that our entire world is turning to technology for EVERYTHING. Just as Angela states above, the idea of robots kinda freaks me out because there is a huge possibility that the technology we create can out smart us. Honestly I think that some people have already allowed technology to out smart them... The only thing that the human population can fall back on is our ability to feel emotions, however, I believe that as technology continues to advance there is the possibility of creating a non human life form that will be able feel and show emotions. This thought is both intriguing and unsettling.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is becoming more and more driven by convenience. If there is a mild annoyance in life technology is attempting to solve it. This is evident by the forays into driverless cars, voice-activated systems, and many modern technological examples. However, at the forefront of all this technology, is the ability to serve the human, to make technology do the work for us. This is much the same way that ancient peoples harnessed the power of other animals to do work for them. Technology is not creating advances in science, it is not commanding warfare. It is not taking over our existence, it is merely serving at the leisure of humans.

I think being human means not being perfect and admitting to our mistakes. We are creating these machines that will be perfect and help us with our daily lives. It will be very beneficial to us to have perfect technology but they aren't human. I think what makes us human is going through the ups and downs of life and getting back on our feet when we do fall down. I am not looking forward to everything be revolved around technology but it will make life easier for us. At the rate technology is advancing, it may one day be able to have emotions and go through everything we go through today.

Everyday we humans are coming closer and closer to creating artificial intelligence. The thought of this becoming reality is some what frighting. Will we be able to control the technology then? Today we have machines that that can do tasks all by themselves. There are cars that can drive themselves, machines in factories that produce products without the help of humans, and we have the ability to see what someone is doing on the other side of the world at any given moment. So what was looked at as fiction many years ago, is becoming a reality today.

Human, to myself, means not “built” but rather, made. Computers and artificial intelligence cannot “die”, cannot “live” either. Human beings are made by other human beings, and we have a finite life, we rely on energy not from an outlet, and we are flawed. Computers (for the most part) do not have emotions, feelings, or a soul. They can think and replace lots of what we do, but are these writing algorithms all that different than a washing machine doing the hard work of washing clothes for us? Our whole lives we are told that “the advances in technology that you will see in your lifetime will be something you cannot even imagine right now”, and this is the truth in that. For all we know, by the time I am in a nursing home, we may have them be entirely automated, it seems cold and harsh, but it’s not really all that different than the current life-support systems we have now that simply did not even close to exist 100 years ago.

It makes sense that people are too lazy to generate their own content. It makes even more sense that we've allowed robots to replace our freedoms. We once had the freedom of self expression but how free are we when the information we receive isn't even real information? Who controls the robots to control the other robots to control us? It's only a matter of time before humans become an endangered species.
ReplyDeleteA human is someone with a beating heart. Yes technology is advancing but I don't think it could ever fully replace the responsibilities of a human being. Technology continues to be a convenience and a way for entertainment, but it can't replace other humans and will never fully accomplish a real conversation. Technology will always be more fragile and more susceptible to damage. Things like our cell phones, new cars and appliances are advertised as perfect, but in reality they could be useless by applying something as simple as water.
ReplyDeleteA human is free to make his/her own decisions, no matter what technology is programmed to serve the needs of the humans that make them, some programs are sophisticated and the technology may seem like it has a mind of its own, but it never will.
