Tell us about your paper due today!

Tell us about your paper, #3. What poem from the textbook and favorite song lyrics did you choose? Why did you choose these texts? What is your thesis and argument in the paper? What is your conclusion? [100 words]

  1. From the textbook, I chose the poem "After a Death" by Roo Barson. This poem is about a girl who recently lost a loved one and seems a little troubled. The song I chose is something I discovered recently and basically just chose from my spotify playlist. The song is "Four Walls" by the Broods, and it is about a girl who is infatuated with someone who does not have the same feelings. She is also very lost and only finds comfort when she is alone and not insecure. I believe that relying on loved ones completely does not benefit individuals in the long run. They are so dependent and and scared because they base their feelings of themselves on what their loved ones think. That is not healthy because they lack independence and a true identity.

  2. I chose the poem “Daystar” by Rita Dove from the text book. The poem is about a young woman who feels she never has time for herself and life seems to be moving too fast for her and she can’t see to keep up. The song I chose is “Fast lane” by Bad meets evil. This song is about life moving in the fast lane and it doesn’t slow down for anyone so you have to keep up. Both the song and the poem represent the same thing how life moves fast and it is our job to keep up with it because it will not slow down for us.

  3. I chose the poem "Leaving the Motel" by W.D. Sondgrass and I compared it to my favorite song which is "Blank Space" by Taylor Swift. I chose them because they both discuss the effects of shaming women for the number of sexual/romantic partners they have. They also talk about the blank spaces as in unknown information and those who take the liberty to fill it in themselves with more than likely false information. My thesis is that there is a double standard when it comes to being sexually active. Men who sleep with a lot of woman are congratulated by their peers and women are slut shamed and rejected by society.

  4. For my poem, I chose “Two Songs” by Adrienne Rich, and my song was “S&M” by Rihanna. I mainly wrote about how sexual arousal is flooding these two women’s minds and they cannot focus on anything else. I described how similar their experiences were, and I also focused on differences such as the different decades each works were created in, the social stigmas that were held up in the early 1960’s against today, and I also wrote about how the actual acts were so drastically different. I delved into how these two works are actually very eerily similar, despite one being about a romantic fling, and the other being about a bondage encounter. Neither woman was interested in love, but both were very passionate about the one-time event. I was very surprised that these two went so well with each other.

  5. The poem I chose from the textbook is "To The Ladies" by Mary Lady Chudleigh and the song I chose is "Keep Ya Head Up" by 2pac. I chose "To The Ladies" because it depicts a stereotypical situation in which a dominant husband takes advantage of his hard working wife. I chose "Keep Ya Head Up" because there are lyrics that talk about treating women equally and with respect. My argument is that we as a society should keep moving towards feminism and gender quality because the future is held in the hands of males and females alike.

  6. For paper number 3, I chose to compare and contrast the poem "Lady Lazarus" by Sylvia Plath to "What a Catch, Donnie" by Fall Out Boy. I chose these two because they both deal with the authors attempted suicide and depression, and their feelings on it. My thesis is that while the to works are about the same thing, they have very different outlooks on it. I thought it was interesting how people can experience the same thing and have two completely different perspectives on it. My conclusion was that depression and suicide are deeply personal things that will effect everyone differently.

  7. From the textbook I chose to do "Hip Hop" by Mos Def and I compared it to the song "still down" by Wiz Khalifa. Both of these poem/songs had the same theme about being hindered by their race and class growing up. Mos Def constantly talked about how the lower class of America struggled with drugs and violence in his song. Likewise Wiz also talked about this, he gave an example of this as well. Wiz talked about Hazelwood Ave and all the violence that happened there while he grew up. My thesis was that both Wiz Khalifa and Mos Def struggled with the same issues of violence growing up due to their social and economic status simply because of their race and class.

  8. I chose the poem, "Wedding-Ring" by Denise Levertov and the song, "Can't Take It With You" by Eric Church. Both the poem and the song are written about separation and divorce. About a significant loved one who no longer part of their life. I wanted to find out the main causes of divorce and figure out if divorces were gender biased. Research shows that the majority of divorces that take place in the US are initiated by women; almost twice as many.

  9. I chose the poem “Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore” by William Shakespeare, and the song “Time” by Riff Raff. I chose both of these examples because my paper describes how time comes and goes and how its privilege not a right. My paper relates to social media and identity. I chose these examples because when you really think about it we as individuals waste our time on social media and it affects our use of ability’s and how we should use it for our advantage and not for waste because time is never guaranteed.

  10. I chose the poem "Barbie" because it reminded me a lot of people who live their entire lives trying to please other people. People are literally dying to be accepted and it's an epidemic that our nation seems to ignore. There are tons of plastic surgeries that go wrong all because people wanted J-lo's butt or Channing Tatum's biceps. The danger is real and people are playing Russian roullette with their lives in an attempt to look good for people who don't matter.

  11. The poem I selected was “Sea of Faith” and the song lyrics I chose were “Bow down”. I specifically discussed the changes of a person’s ego that take place after they have accomplished many things throughout their life. The majority of people tend to lose their humbleness after they have reached the top. Just like in any history it is important to remember the past because if it is forgotten the qualities that got them to where they are now will be lost.

  12. also, I used the song "nobody but you" by algebra blessett because she talks about self acceptance and how important it is to connect with yourself before you try to connect with other people.

  14. The poem I chose is Robert Frost's "The road not taken" and the song "courage to grow" because they both highlight on how the choices we have to make often define who we are. The poems also present the importance of self-awareness. I argued that confidence is crucial in achieving full self-awareness and that people shouldn't live a life of regret. I concluded that both "The road not taken" and "Courage to grow" encourage taking the less traveled path.

  15. I chose the poem "Hanging Fire" by Aurdre Lorde and the song "I Walk Alone" by Green Day. Within my paper I spoke about the sadness that they both share. I also mention how the sadness has been bestowed upon those based on color and look. I showed how each was different because of the situations that are forcing the sadness into their lives. Both people have been trying to find their place in this world but are not having any luck.

  16. The poem that I chose was "To a daughter leaving home". The song I chose to compare and contrast was Shinedown's " the Crow and the butterfly". I chose these texts because they were in direct comparison to eachother. Both poems included loss in somewhat of the same form. The poems also provide an argument that more compassion and dedication is placed towards the female gender. This is my thesis sentence "Both of these literary authors identify with time and the concept of time progressing through the nature of growing older and raising a child." I conclude with directly tying in the simularities of the poem and my choice of song by Shinedown.

  17. I chose the poem Cherrylog Road and contrasted it to the song Long Hard Road by Alan Jackson because of the similarities between the poem and country music. Much of what occurs in the poem is reflected in so many country songs but Alan Jackson seems to hit the right note. I focused on the hardship and perseverance as these are common topics in country music as well as the main focus in the poem.

  18. I chose the poem "The Facebook Sonnet" and the song "Under the Bridge" and compared them. I wrote about how people may use Facebook and drugs to forget their identity. I wrote about the song, and what it meant; it was written by Antony Kiedis at a very low point in his life. I also feel that a lot of people try to portray themselves as someone who they are not on social media to cope with their identity. Of course the drugs are more extreme than Facebook.
