Weekly Reading

Tell us 10 things you learned from this week's readings.

15 comments:

  1. I already knew quite a bit about poetry, we covered it a lot in my last Literature class, but these things were refreshed:

    1. I learned about how you can listen to a different tone in a poem, and how having a certain tone does not mean that the story will be the same. An example is that a story with a happy tone could still be a sad poem.

    2. Poetry is all about “feeling.” It is not just an intellectual and bookish activity, but you have to grasp the “feel” of the poem rather than just the word. It requires a deeper understanding of the words.

    3. There is no one “correct” way to read a poem. Every person can respond differently to the same poem, which makes poetry discussions seem very deep.

    4. It is important to even consider the title before you read the poem, you need to understand each and every part of the poem, and even what you expect the poem to be about can be important to understanding the poem.

    5. You must read the syntax literally, at least for the first read-through because it can help you understand.

    6. You must consider how the poem’s form contributes to the effect and meaning, because even the way the poem is formed matters in what it means or how it makes the reader “feel”.

    7. Love is the most expressed emotion in poems whether it is the direct emotion or not. Poetry is the “food of love.”

    8. Poems can also be dark and moody as well as about love.

    9. Setting is very important to the literature and sometimes it can be abstract.

    10. Repetition can change the feel of the poem, and can be a very strong literary component.

  5. Personally, I do not enjoy poetry very much unless I see a few good ones on tumblr. I have a hard time reading between the lines and deciphering certain meanings. This week in the readings I did learn a few things about poetry though.
    1. Some poetry has very dark meanings that you have to uncover. The symbolism for certain objects and things can be very dark or the opposite, it could very positive and romantic.

    3. Recognizing if the poem is rhyming or not. Also if the poem has lines or stanzas.
    4. It is important to understand the words that are in the poem, use reference to uncover the meaning of the poem and diction.
    5. In some cases reading the words literally will help with meaning. Use the syntax literally and not think of a hidden meaning.
    6. Read the poem a few times. This will help to recognize things you did not previously.
    7. Read the title and think about what you expect the poem will be about.
    8. Discuss the poem with someone so you can get there understandings which could open your eyes to something you did not catch.
    9. Not all poetry will appeal to you, read it with an open mind and think of the reason behind why the author wrote it.
    10. Lastly, relate the poem to past experiences which could also give you a better understanding. It could help you relate to the authors pain and reasoning.
