  1. I chose to write my essay about the games being played in " The Changeling" and "Exchanging Hats." In modern society, high fashion consists of wearing the opposite genders clothing. It is socially acceptable because it is a trend. Individuals take on both roles nowadays due to broken marriages and other factors that cause them to take on both. In "Exchanging Hats," the hat represents a certain mindset and understanding, which the speaker is not. In "The Changeling," the daughter wears the opposite gender's clothing to make a statement to her father and grab his attention. Being aware of these issues and conforming to this changing society is the way of the future ad exactly where we are headed. It will help brace everyone for what is to come and possibly to understand more.

  2. I chose to focus on one poem. I used "Exchanging Hats" for my paper because it seemed to strike up an emotion of sadness in me. The way the poem is written seems to leave the discussion on gender open and ambiguous while still keeping a light but judgmental approach. There are times when the poet seems to entertained by her uncles act and there are others when she seems to be irritated by it. She uses one line "unfunny uncles who insist on trying on a woman's hat" to relay to the audience her disapproval of what her uncle is doing. However, she uses another line "oh, even if the joke falls flat we share in your slight transvestite twist".

  3. i Wrote my essay based upon the poem "The Changeling". it realty grabbed my attention when i first read it a few time through. the poem is written about a little girl who decides to act like a boy and amuse her father and her mother is not to fond of the idea and she resents the little girl and makes her change into a "Young lady" i used this poem to not only relate to my gender but how society changes and how people will always say what is right and what is wrong but it’s for us to decide how we want to live and be happy without other individuals telling our natural society otherwise.

  4. I wrote my essay on “The Changeling” by Judith Ortiz Cofer and “Disabled” by Wilfred Owen. Both these poems really grabbed my attention from the start. “The Changeling” is about a little girl who dresses up to amuse her father, but her mother does not approve. “Disabled” is about a young man who went to war thinking he was a big shot and didn't realize the reality of war until he was involved in a brutal injury. I compared these two poems to show how the poets created a role for each gender to follow. The Young man to go to war, and the young girl to cook and clean like women did.

  5. I wrote my paper on the poem,"To the Ladies" by Mary Lady Chudleigh. This poem starts off comparing women to servants and giving women the role of being a house wife and obeying men's commands. Women and men are different in many ways and I do believe we see through a different lens when we look at the same topic. I also think men and women should be treated equally. I agree with the author of the poem and how she thinks that if women were to stand for something and be proud of what they do, men will not look down upon them in a lesser way.

  6. For my essay I used Question #1 for my suggestion and used the poem "The Changeling" by Judith Ortiz Cofer. The poem really made about the binary gender system and gender roles in our society. I believe that western civilization is moving away from the path that says the only way to identify ourselves is based on “parts” and moving more towards the path that is based on what makes the person the happiest. I also think that gender roles are becoming less of a priority in society.

  7. I wrote my paper about “The Changeling” by Judith Ortiz Cofer. I thought this poem was interesting because the little girl enjoys dressing as a man and telling tales of battle. Her father is amused by it but her mother is not. Her mother believes that the little girl should not be dressing as a man and should only act/dress as a little girl. The mother makes the little girl change back into her clothes and braid her hair. The little girl feels invisible when she does this. I wrote about how society used to frown upon this type of behavior but we are becoming more accepting of it as time passes

  8. For my essay, I analyzed “The Changeling”, by Judith Ortiz Coffer. I chose to answer the first suggested writing, which only focused on one poem. My thesis was that “The Changeling” is a very powerful, emotional poem addressing gender roles forced onto young girls, and that I can personally relate to it. Due to the question I had to answer, I did not need to argue anything. I used examples from the poem itself, and examples from my life to make my point. I also brought up how gender roles can have lasting negative effects on young women. My conclusion restated my thesis, and added that I personally found the poem very insightful.

my paper describes in detail the poem written by Michael weaver. My thesis statement is the equality of blacks and the woman gender. My argument is that they are not treated fairly in education and work. My examples are the fact that studies show that black men and woman of all ethnicities have a higher risk of poor health. Because of health deficiencies in these genders they are less likely to receive average job rates and pay.

  10. The poem To the Ladies is the one that I chose to write my paper on. I compared the relationship of gender and time to the poem. The poem is about the author comparing a wife to a servant and explaining how they are closely related. The reason that time is important to the plot is because this was a poem written in the late seventeenth century and social classes back then differ from those today. Women have equal rights in modern society and legally a wife can no longer be a “servant”. Over time the relationship between men and women has changed drastically.

  11. I wrote my paper about "Practicing" by Marie Howe. I was shocked by the vulgarity in the poem and I read the interview she had about the poem. I thought that it was a great example of the gender role of a woman and what it means to be female. She was not told what the role of a woman was while she was growing up. In her delicate teenage years she had a lot of confusion on this topic.

  12. My paper attempted to answer the third prompt. My father is in the military so exploring the role of warfare in gender identification seemed the most enticing of the prompts. My thesis stated that women were most often relegated to less direct roles in warfare, while the men took pride in being the bravest and the best in combat. The Gaelic tribes of ancient Europe provided the perfect example of this. While the women lived at home, the men would go out and fight the other tribes. I concluded my essay by explaining how warfare influenced people since the beginning of intelligent humans. Even in modern times, the identification of gender roles is often defined similar to how wars were defined.

  13. My paper was about feminism and how women are rebelling against men's societal norms. I spoke about how women should stand up for themselves more and that cooking dinner resembles how women are treated poorly all across America. My thesis I suppose would be that women are fighting for their rights in the home. Just because you're a housewife doesn't mean you're not a person.

  14. I wrote my paper on how children can be strongly influenced on their gender roles by their parents, and other adult elders. I chose "The changeling", and "Exchanging hats" for my examples and compared the two different styles. In my research I found that gender stereotypes can be eliminated and society should continue in trying to do so. I concluded that Putting girls and boys into categories strongly discourages equality, and will also lead minors into occupations they don't enjoy.

  15. The thesis of my paper is how war affects gender roles and, inversely, how gender roles affect war. Using suggestion #3, I compared the three suggested poems and using their similarities and differences to infer about why roles are the way they are and how they can change. With increasing technology, women are progressively growing more independent and gaining equality in the workplace but it seems that in every conflict the men are the ones who do the fighting while the women stay at home. How this will change with growing female independence is a question only the future can answer.

  16. In my paper I wrote about 2 poems "Disabled" by Wilfred Owen and "The Changeling" by Judith Ortiz Cofer, and I wrote about a topic that was not directly discussed in "American Income" but was still discussed, however I wrote about the pay gap between men and women working the same jobs in America. I wrote about gender roles from a viewpoint that there should be more equality in America.

  17. For this essay, I wrote about "Exchanging Hats" and "The Changeling". My thesis is that women have to act like a man in order to express their opinions and have anyone listen to them and gender roles and how they impact society. The examples I used were from articles I found online. They were women doing typically manly jobs and them also being the primary breadwinner for the household. There were some men who felt not being the breadwinner for the house damaged their masculinity and there were some who refused to do house chores if they were the breadwinner. My conclusion was that I think society will never change its ways and we will always have gender rules.

  18. For paper number two, I decided to write about the poem "Barbie Doll" by Margie Piercy. My thesis for my paper is that women in today's world are taught to do anything possible in order fit in to societies expectations of them. Throughout my paper I talked about various things that women may go through in order to feel as if they are included or a part of something bigger. This particular poem talks about a girl who once had strong confidence and overtime the words of others slowly but surely changed everything about her. She accepted that she should be what society wants, as a result ending her life. I concluded that no one will truly accept you for what you really are, but will feel very bad about it when they see the negative result of your actions.

  19. For essay #2, I wrote about the poems “The Changeling” and “Exachaning Hats. During my essay I dabbled between parenting skills with a child’s gender. How does a parent contribute to raising a child based on there gender? Well everyone is different and have personal opinions with this topic. For example, we all know that every set of parents have there own tactics of raising children. Therefore, some may be more leniate torward how a girl should dress and act. In the poem “The Changeling” the mother was very strict torward her daughter, forcing her to quit her “manly” games. In “Exchanging Hats”, the aunt and uncle feel more relaxed about playing the role of another gender.
