Check out a blog (linked below) by famous economist, Robert Reich. Read the posts "Back to the Nineteenth Century" and "The Share-the-Scraps Economy" and give us some feedback here (100+ words).
We've been talking about identities and bodies and technology. What is your opinion of the computer/machine economy? Should we worry -- or will new jobs be created that we can't now foresee? How do you plan to make money in an economy based on machine-work?

Americans learn to adapt. That's what we've always done. I believe that computer/machine technology has many downfalls but also many benefits. The production of certain machines and technology can produce jobs that we never knew to be possible. However, with the role of new technology in America's daily lives many present day jobs will be eliminated and replaced with smaller paying, tedious tasks. Much like the uber taxi drivers, it makes life easier for others but comes at a cost to the drivers. Whether this cost being loss of family time, self time, money, or relationships in general, many people still commit great amounts of their lives to things such as this for the sake of new technology. I believe that you can never completely rid people, human beings, from the working world. In a machine and technology based economy people must learn to grow and adapt to the new changes and find there place among technology or thus let it overrun everything previously known. New technology and machinery should be invited but watched with a close eye.
ReplyDeleteNew technology will always be something people are afraid of or even amazed by. The things new technology is capable of is very insane. It goes along with moving into the future and making our lives easier. It does take many jobs away though from people who could be doing them but now since technology has the capabilities that reason is moot. More jobs will be created using different technologies. The Uber taxi drivers do risk family time and such but its all about self motivation. How far are individuals willing to go to make money. There will always be jobs its just a matter of who wants them bad enough. Nothing we do will really change the fact that new technology is being made everyday, many things are created without the publics knowledge. We as a society have to learn how to adapt to it and create jobs and a thriving community.

Technology is something that will never go away and will always be something we participate in. Technology is used to try and make our lives easier in an effective way. One bad thing we have learned about technology is it can do a lot of jobs people do. People are worried that if we advance technology to much; they may take all the jobs people usually do. The uber taxi drivers help make life easier for the customers using them, but it may not be good for the drivers. I believe there will always be jobs for humans. I believe with the help of technology, it could potentially create more jobs for people.

Unfortunately, our society has been shaped to benefits those with a lot of money and to whatever can bring us the most convenience.I think people with money can make anything happen whenever they want to and those who don't have money are stuck trying to make ends meet. I don't think having robots do all of the predictable jobs will benefit us and I don't want it to happen. But, I think we are already starting to shift towards that. I feel as if it takes away from the experience of interacting with other people. What are we supposed to do if a machine breaks down and no one is there to immediately fix it? Then, that makes it an inconvenience to us. Working unpredictable hours makes life more stressful for multiple reasons. It doesn't allow you to properly plan your budget because you will not know how money you will make. It also makes your whole life unpredictable because you will never know when you will have to leave for work. Some people like living an impulsive lifestyle. But people like me enjoy having things planned out. I think technology has advantages in certain areas but we should not completely rely on it.

Everyday new types of technology are being created, and evolving faster than we know it. In this day and age technology is a huge impact to our society. We have learned to adapt and revolutionize technology each chance we get, our society is very depending and we try to make life easier and more luxurious for ourselves. I believe in this rapid growth of technology can give us many benefits. Unless you work in a factory that manufactures items, then yes, it may affect that particular job. But from the outside looking in it gives us more careers to take advantage of.

Technology has many wonderful benefits, but there are also negatives to it as well. Technology has already turned our society into something it has never been before and I believe that it will only continue to do so. I don't believe that we should worry about advancing technology, as long as it is used in the most efficient way as possible. I think job security will remain stable as technology continues to advance. Going into the medical field, I am thrilled to see how technology will change the face of the health care industry within the next few decades.
ReplyDeleteTechnology has its benefits and its downfalls, I personally believe that it is over-developing. Technology has made some serious advancements over the years. Over the past century we have seen technology become more and more prevalent into everybody's lives. I feel as if it has reached the point to where we have become dependent on it. I don't think most people could even live one day without their smart phone now. As good as technology is, I believe that it can become our downfall eventually.

I would like to think that we do not need to worry about technology and machines in the future taking away our jobs, but when you can pay one price for something that will do the same work a human can, without having to pay them or worry about their work ethic, then I would be worried about companies using machines, robots, and technology to replace the human workforce. I still think we have a long time to go before we see the robot/machine in every household era like in the movie IRobot, but eventually society might see that as an option to seek out. Cars are already becoming extremely advanced; they can now drive themselves. I still think that monetary dollars will be the force for the economy, and positions that deal with the flow of money will still be available.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is changing everyday. New ideas are created daily. The pros out weigh the cons when it comes to technology. Thirty years ago, if you asked someone what a cell phone was they would simply look at you like you were crazy. Now new smartphones give people the power to manage and monitor their houses from anywhere in the world. New technology has saved lives. New surgical instruments allow for quicker and safer surgeries. People shouldn't worry too much about the advancement of technology. As long as it is used right then there should be no troubles.

The goal behind automation is to make life easier for people. As standards of living rise higher and higher, people desire to work less and less. The more entertainment an economy provides, the more people want to enjoy that entertainment. In the past your job was seen as your main source of entertainment. In the modern day jobs are secondary to one’s social life. Overall the quality of life has risen, at least in America. What qualifies for poverty today, was the equivalent of middle class many years ago. Automation will accelerate this process until a select few are in charge of maintaining teachings, while everyone else relaxes in luxury.

The development of a computer/machine economy came into existence in only a half century. Factory jobs are being taken by new and more efficient machines and the results are laid off workers. I do believe that new jobs will come into existence to maintenance these invasive machines but the percentages don’t match up. Humans have become far to advance for their own good and the consequences are that we must suffer. Humans have invented machines to solve problems but don’t realize that the planet earth is not perfect and was never supposed to be.
ReplyDeleteJoseph Ledo-Massey
The computer/machine economy continues to grow because of advancing technology. Some people believe that this could take away jobs but I think advancing technology also creates technology based jobs. Reich mentions in his article that this could lead to more unstable, on-demand jobs. Companies such as amazon, and Uber need to provide more pay for their employees, and create more stable hours. This is necessary for setting examples for future technology based companies.
ReplyDeleteTechnology will continue to grow enormously in the years and decades to come. It will continue to take over less skilled labor and put blue collar class workers out of work. This change will result in a middle class less and less reliant on manufacturing jobs and push them into lower paying and satisfying hospitality/service oriented type work. There is nothing we can do about this. The world will change to accomadate the newer technolgies and not shed a tear over jobless workers. We cannot fear it we can only adapt to it. One bright side in this is now I know to invest in tech stocks for my IRA.

We all know by now that we are getting prepared in school, and for some majors (such as engineering majors) in college, to train for jobs that do not even exist yet. Students starting kindergarten this year have no conceivable idea of the types of jobs they might have in the future, and that is just because technology grows so exponentially fast. It makes sense that the economy is becoming more geared towards computers and machines, it is sad but the way things were destined to go. I believe that the economy will slowly shift toward not needing every individual to have their own job, like it used to be in the past. It has been shown that millennials value a one-income lifestyle, and if these “human” jobs are more scarce, but can potentially offer more benefits and pay, then it should not be an issue. For example, if you have a well-paying job overseeing computers, you would be able to support more than just yourself, or have better tax programs. The country needs to change with its ever-evolving computerized economy. Also, there will always be jobs that have to be done by humans, examples would include chefs, teachers, politicians, customer service, and many countless others, so there will always be jobs for at least 1/3 of the people, and ideally in a dream world we could all live off of part-time jobs and use computers for their intended purpose: to make life easier.
ReplyDeleteIn the last century, technology has replaced many jobs that people once had. It has made people very competitive to work because so many working people have been laid off. I think this is because we are still adjusting to technology because it is happening all too fast. Technology is our main source of entertainment as well. We rely on it in too many circumstances. Beside from taking our jobs, technology is also taking other responsibilities away, such as typing or driving. We have become lazy but the overall quality of life has drastically improved.

I do not believe machines will take over all of the jobs with unchanging hours and pay. I think people are over-reacting about this issue, because we will almost always need engineers, politicians, political advisers, managers, business owners, investors, restaurant servers, etc. I believe the advancement of technology will eventually help humanity. We fear things without really thinking it through, factory jobs will be taken, but we will need people to produce/maintain the machines. I do not believe the advancement of machines is as bad as this article portrays it to be, there will always be jobs.

Technology is making life easier for everyone, but it has certain costs. Making life easier for people is the main goal of technology, and it is working at that well. advancements in science make almost all parts of life better, such as the entertainment and medical aspects. It will only continue to grow, and it is becoming clear that people who do not adapt to it will fall to the wayside. The shift to a computer based economy is a positive one, and will only continue into the future.

The problem with a capitalist society is the gap between employers and employees that inevitably occurs. As unemployment rises, the need for work increases which equates to people willing to work for lower wages. People that were once jobless are then supplied with more work than they can handle because of their cheap cost. This, coupled with the cost of transportation, puts other people in a tough position because they can no longer afford to work even a minimal distance from their homes. As a result, there will always be a struggle for someone, somewhere.
ReplyDeleteThe robots taking over the fixed-labor marketplace is debatable. While jobs will be lost because of the high-efficiency, low-mistake labor that robots offer, a large workforce in the mechanics and robotics industry will emerge. It is hard to determine exactly how the job market will shift. In the end, it is we who build the robots. It is we who can destroy them. If it comes to a point where robots fulfill the entire job market, people will ultimately do away with the robots and return to old fashioned labor. Considering the growing dependence on technology, it might be a little easier said than done.
Daniel Dearing
Technology makes life easier and because of that we are willingly and blindly giving up our freedoms. Grocery stores are cutting baggers and cashiers because automated systems are faster. That's just one example of how we are allowing the benefits of technology shield us from it's potential long term dangers. I think that technology is necessary and increases our quality of living but I fear that it will force our youth to compete in a society where jobs are scarce. I believe that there will come a time when we are all overly educated and find ourselves in immeasurable amounts of debt.

I agree one hundred percent with the opioin that we are heading directly into a robot work force era. I do not feel that this type of economy would help anyone of lower or middle class incomes. Rather it would ultimately take jobs away from our actual economic work force. I do however believe that technology is an ever progressing exciting phase of our common era existence. I can see where a more technological society could better the economy, simply due to imperfection. If imperfect man built the machine then it will require not only general maintenance but upgrades as well. I'm a guitarist by nature now, melodies anf song writing with passion cannot be written by a machine. Whether it be techno or dub step in the new age, musicians still have to compse these mechanical like sounds together.
