  1. In the tale “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, the story is subtitled “A Tale for Children" because it has a reference with children and how they act. People go to see the winged man because they think he is an angel who can help them. They stop seeing him because a “freak” arrives with a tale about how a girl was transformed into a spider because she didn’t listen to her parents. This shows human behavior because it is how we as humans are interested in the latest things and when new things come we forget about the old ones. I think the theme is to never abandon those who try and help you, and to not treat them wrong and then abandon them when something else comes. I believe the man is an angel because he helps cure people from illnesses and has ginormous wings like an angel. An angel is a spiritual being acting as an agent, or messenger from god. I think an angel would look like a normal person with huge magnificent wings like they describe in the story. An angel will help people and would help guide someone or send a message from god.

  2. The story is subtitled "A Tale for Children" because it sounds like a story children would learn in Sunday School. It acts as a story to teach kids a lesson. All the villagers are so fascinated with the winged man and visit him until the girl who was transformed into a spider comes along. She was transformed because she disobeyed her parents and that was her punishment. The story reveals how humans always want the next best thing and what people can offer them. Also how the husband and wife used the wing man to make money off of him and then felt guilt when he flew away. I believe the theme is to treat everyone with respect and to not use people for what they give you. They try to send the winged man away but once they realize they can make a profit on him they lock him in a chicken coop. I believe the winged man is an angel and was there to help their son get better. I think he showed up all raggedy and disheveled as a test. It was a test to see if they would take care of him. Angels are heaven sent to act as a guide for people and a messenger for God. An angel does not necessarily have to have wings, they could look anyway but the real test is to treat everyone right because you do not know who is there to help you.

  3. This story is subtitled "A Tale for Children" because it could easily act as a guide to teaching children the importance of quick decisions and fleeting moments. It reminds them to value other people and reserve judgement. If the wife hadn't gotten the bright idea to charge who knows how many people would have gotten a potentially free freak show. Eventually, people stopped coming to see the old man because they were more fascinated with the newest spider woman attraction. A general theme of respect could be applied but on a more human level the theme could be to stay true to yourself. The old man waited around for the right moment to free himself and I think that says a lot about his patience. I think that an angel can come in any shape, form or situation and I do believe that the old man was an angel.

  4. I believe the subtitle of the story “ A Very old man with enormous wings: a tale for children”, I thinks it subtitled “ A tale for children because its very brief it involves creatures such as the spider woman and the old angel and teaches a moral lesson. People begin to stop seeing the old man because the freak show appeared into town, this drove the audience away from the old man and to the freak show. I believe the story reveals human behavior when the people drew there attention towards the latest and greatest attraction that came into town was more interesting and the people got bored with the old man. I truly think the old man was an angel. Angels can come into our lives in many different ways physically, sometimes mentally what we can see but others cannot. And he has wings and most stero typical angels inquire wings.

  5. The story can subtitled as "A Tale for Children" for many reasons. To me it is subtitled this because the story is used as a lesson for children. It shows them that no judgment is the best thing to have. Over time people begin to turn away from the old man because they have heard stories of a woman who is transformed into a giant tarantula who attracts their attention more than the old man. The old man is also not compliant with the wishes from the crowd and instead ignores them and their threating yells and actions. I believe that the man is indeed an angel, just in a different form that can be expected or associated with the word angel. Angels are normally perceived as white, beautiful, clean, and majestic beings. When others claim that the man is in fact an angel they choose to overlook it and view him in a negative manner. They only wish to use him for the powers that they have heard he possess but do not care about the person he is within. People overlook the kindness and good things that the angel bestows on those who do not expect or beg for it. One major theme I can apply to this story is not to judge so quickly but to take time and see the real person behind the outer looks. This story sets the perfect example for how many human beings possess the selfish qualities that make others feel down about themselves. It shows the cruelty that humans have towards those that are seen to be different.

  6. "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" is subtitled "A Tale for Children" because it has a fantasy/magical stye that would be appropriate for children. This story reminds me of fairy tale, yet more eerie. People stop going to see the winged man because something more interesting and magical comes around. A girl who was transformed into a spider for disobeying her parents soon becomes the center of attention. This depicts the human behaviors of entertainment, greed, and ignorance. People only seem to view the angel as entertainment, as soon as something more interesting comes along they decide to go look at that instead. Pelayo and Elisenda use the angel to make a profit, but don't really care for him other than the money they can make. Ignorance is also shown in this story because the villagers didn't know what he was so they treated him poorly because of their lack of knowledge. A theme of this story would be how we act towards those who are different than us. The people of the town treated him very badly and that's because he was so much different than all of them. Even today we tend to view those who are "different" with negative connotations. I don't think the man was an angel. Angels are devine, heavenly, and whimsical. The man was being treated so poorly and I feel like if he was an angel he would have left right away because of that. I think it was a coincidence that the child got better when the man arrived. Also, it does not seem that Pelayo and Elisenda had done anything to deserve an angel being sent to them as a healer or messenger.

  7. The tale is for children because it shows children how cruel people can be. The adults in the situation immediately locked up the “angel” and started advertising him as a side show. People originally wanted to see the angel because he was an oddity and they thought he might be able to heal them. After a small amount of time it became apparent the angel had very askew healing powers and often did more harm than good. In addition people quickly became bored with seeing the same thing everyday. The story reveals how greedy and paranoid people can be. Having no idea who he was, the family immediately locked him up, out of fear for their child dying. However, even after their son turned out okay, they continued to hold him prisoner and charge people to see him. I would say the theme of the story is that adults are foolish and petty. The humans got quickly bored of the oddity and it showed at the end how the angel was always a nuisance even up to the day he flew away, never a possible benefit. The man is whatever the author intended him to be. He could very well have been an angel. However in leaving it ambiguous the author makes us consider him to not be an angel and question our own decisions in dealing with people.

  8. 1. The story is subtitled “A Tale for Children” because it is a far off fiction story that would most likely appeal to children.
    2. People stop going to see the winged man because the lady that turned into a spider was more interesting and new.
    3. This story reveals that most humans have compulsive behavior to like new things.
    4. The theme I would assign to this story is that people can change if you give them time.
    5. The man is an angel, an angel is a messenger from heaven, and he looked just like a human but with large wings

  9. The reason why the sub-title is called "a tale for children" it is kinda like a fantasy based story. It has an angel and a girl who turned into a spider which is a little far-fetched. This story was kinda dark in my opinion, the angel healed the kid and yet was stuck in a pen and used as a show for the owners to make money. The only reason why people stopped going to see the old man is because a freak show came into town with a girl who turned into a spider. This story shows how cruel people can be and how we can treat others that are different than us.

  10. 1) The story may be intended for children but I think that is a bit dark.
    2) I think that the reason people got bored with the "Angel" and wanted to see the "Spider woman" was because people always what the newer and better thing.
    3) I think this story is about judging people and questioning how we deal with people.
    4) I think that the man was intended to be an angel

  11. The story can be subtitled as "A Tale for Children" because the story teaches lesson for children. It shows them that no judgment is the best thing to have. When the old man is first discovered everyone is mesmerized and look at him as an angel. The people of the town incise the old man be clubbed to death. The old man is then used as a tourist attraction. After awhile the people start to turn away from the man and focus on the woman that can turn into a tarantula. The man I believe is an angel. The angel's looks represent what the world and the people are like. His dirty looks symbolize poverty. Poverty is one of the biggest struggles in the world. Therefore the angel is used as a symbol of the world.

  12. I thoroughly enjoyed “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” for several reasons. I had already read this tale in my previous AP Literature class, but I enjoyed reading the story again. This story could be subtitled as a tale for children due to the bizarre creatures (the spider lady) and the simplistic representations of money (coins rather than dollars, they “filled up their mansion”). Although I personally view this as quite a dark tale for a child to read, I could understand it being used to explain compassion for people below you, and to treat everybody with equal and deserving respect. The spectators stopped going to see the winged man when a more bizarre and entertaining act came to town. A lady with a spider body came to town, and she actually spoke with people and did more than just lay around and be apathetic. This story shows human insight in that people fear any other “strange” people other than themselves. People inherently feel insecure around things/beings that they do not understand, such as the winged man. I believe that the man is an angel. Angels do not need to subscribe to the “perfect” ideology that we imagine when we think of God’s servants. We personally believe angels to be beautiful, holy creatures with dazzling wings and golden halos above them. This winged man could be a more realistic adaptation on an angel, but the mere fact that he cured the child shows that he is, in fact, an angel.

  13. I think the reason it is called a tale for children is because the story is fiction. It is about a man with wings, an angel you might say. I think people stop going to see the winged man is because he lost his "wow" factor. At first people have never seen anything like that before so they were all excited to see him; after a while it just got old. People are a curious species and this excites them. I think the same thing still happens in today's society. You can never judge a book by its cover, including the title. It depends on what you would determine an angel. Personally, since I am religious, would say it was an angel. It didn't do any harm to anyone and healed the sick. According to descriptions in the Bible, my assumptions are that they would have wings.

  14. The story is titled as such because it is quite imaginitive almost like an old tale. People stop going to see the angel because there is a better side show in town, the tarantula lady. I believe the story illustrates just how horrible people can be. I mean for God's sake an angel comes and people are brand it and throwing rocks at it all while its locked up in a cage. I believe the theme is to treat those as you want to be treated or bad things happen. The man is most definetly an angel. He has all the characteristics of an angel. An angel in my book is a winged being from heaven, but then what the hell do I know.

  15. The story is subtitled "A tale for children" because it may be meant to teach children the lesson of kindness and acceptance. The story often went into detail about the gruesome condition the angel was in, and how the cruel treatment from his spectators only made it worse. People eventually stopped going to see the angel because a new attraction, the spider woman, came into town and captured everyones attention. The human behavior in the story reveals our cruelty and selfishnes. Elisenda and Pelayo kept him locked in the chicken coop in order to make money, and didnt care for him. The spectators demonstrarted their cruelty by poking him with hot metal in order to make him move. I think one of the themes in the story is to be more accepting of new things. The angels cruel treatment only came about because people were so fascinated by his differences. I think the man is a real angel because his wings were real and he flew away at the end of the story. I dont think he is an angel in the traditional sense. The man was very old and seemed unhealthy, and very humbled.

  16. This story is subtitled “A Tale for Children” because it seems like a story that is meant to teach children a lesson. Everyone is obsessed and fascinated with the angel until a girl comes to town with a tale about how she was turned into a spider for disobeying her parents and sneaking out to a dance. Most children are only interested with what is new to them. When they get a new toy, they play with it the most and eventually forget about their other toys. The angel is like a “toy” to the villagers, he is no longer interesting to them so they care less about him and more about the spider girl. The story also shows that humans are only after personal gain. Most of the villagers go to the winged man because they think he can heal or cure them of their ailments. Pelayo and his wife keep the angel locked in a chicken coop as soon as they realize that they can make a monetary gain from his presence. No one cares about the well being of the angel, they only care about themselves.

A very old man with wings
Perhaps the story is titled this way to allude to a nursery like fairy tale. The man is almost young inside he finds himself in a calm trapped position. In the midst of a society that does not know or understand what he is. When a circus comes to town as amazing as it may be the first time, eventually the eight-tenth time they begin to feel bad for the man. Eventually he is viewed as more as a beast and a burden. Humans will make money on anything they possibly can. The themes could be angelic or demonic, and could have several underlying meanings. I do not believe the man was an angel. The man appeared to be more of a fallen angel or some freak of nature, however he did seem to possess so,e sort of healing powers. I believe the only Angels that walk amongst us today are imposters, simply workers for the devil. An angel is someone to me that lives in a upmost self sacrificing way. Angels could like anyone with a great heart.

  18. The story is sub-titled ''A Tale for Children" because the main audience is likely children, even though it is a little odd for a children's story. People stop going to see the angel because there is a woman who can turn into a tarantula, and apparently that is more amusing to people that an old angel, plus it is cheaper to go see the tarantula woman so you're really getting a bargain there. The insights into human behavior that this story has is that people are drawn to new thing, especially if that thing is cheaper. I believe the man was meant to be an angel. i believe an angel is a being that can help you, and I have no idea what an angel looks like.

  19. The story is called "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings: A Tale for Children”. It has this subtitle because the story is aimed at children that are young and innocent, because it will educate them about the ways that people act. People go and see the winged man because they think he is an angel, and for some that means a messenger of their god and for others he is a mythical creature. When word gets out, many people come expecting him to heal them or grant them what they want. The short story shows how people are selfish and bore easily. One they see the “angel” is not acting in the way they expected to, they quickly move on to the next attraction, with no concern for his well being. The theme of the story can be that people are selfish, or that patience is important. The man tolerates all of the things that happen to him without complain, and then gets to leave when his wings regrow. I do not think he is an angel in the traditional sense. A real angel would have the ability to leave when treated poorly, but the man stays.

  20. I think the story is subtitled “A Tale for Children” because to me, it seems like a fairy tale but it also can teach them a lesson. People stop seeing the winged man because the spider woman came along. I also think that it is because of our short attention span. We only care about one thing until something new comes along or until we just stop caring. I think the story shows how selfish and ignorant some people are. They are fascinated by the winged man because he brings them entertainment. As soon as he stops entertaining them, he is cast aside. Instead of thinking about the man being locked up like an animal, he is treated as a circus attraction. Their lack of knowledge is also shown by the way they treat him. He is treated as entertainment because they don’t know who or what he is which is how our society acts today. If most people come across something they don’t understand or haven’t seen before, they treat it as something below them. I think a theme of the story is knowledge and the experience that life brings us. I also think patience and respect can be taught to children with this story. If we take the time out and care enough to get to know things that are foreign to us, the world will be a better place. Most people think angels are those who are covered in white from head to toe and have a halo above their head. But I think an angel can be anyone who comes into our life and the perfect time to aid us in any way shape or form. I think an angel can also be someone who teaches us a lesson and makes us better people.
